Life is the Greatest Gift

“Life is the greatest gift that God has bestowed on human beings. Since human life is created in the image of God, it belongs to Him. We have no right to destroy it.” (Blessed Teresa of Calcutta)

This has been an interesting year for the prolife movement. First there was the case of Terri Schiavo, the forty-year-old woman who was starved to death. Two days after her death, our beloved Pontiff, John Paul II, who was a great defender of life, entered into eternal life. Finally, there was the election of Pope Benedict XVI.

Terri represented the millions of people who have no voice in the matter of what happens to them. Not only are millions of babies being murdered, but euthanasia is plaguing our country. Many people call it “mercy killing.” How is it merciful to kill an innocent human being who has no say whatsoever in the matter?

Pope John Paul II was a strong promoter of the prolife movement. From the beginning to the end of his reign as pope, he spoke out against the evils of abortion, euthanasia, and stem cell research. He was the first to speak of the “Culture of Life” and the “Culture of Death.” He is a great example to all who work to end these evils.

Now we have a new pope who, I am certain, will continue fighting these evils. We, in turn, must do our part to rid our country of them. Not a day should go by without us praying for the end of abortion. Prayer is the greatest way to frustrate the devil’s acts. We also must keep protesting against it. This is not the time to remain silent. If we do, the devil will triumph.

This year our motto was “Raise Your Voice” and it was dedicated to the prolife movement. Our challenge to each person was to speak out against abortion. Now that the year is closing, we must ask ourselves if we succeeded. Did we speak out more than we used to or were we still convinced that one person cannot do much? Upon answering this question we must ponder how we can improve in the future.

I hope that each person will take it upon himself to continue the challenge of working against the evils that plague our country. Keep “raising your voice” for those who have no voice.
